Tooth Structure

Our teeth are made up of 4 tissues –

Enamel: The strong white outer layer which protects the tooth. Enamel is mostly made of Calcium Phosphate

Dentin:  A layer underlying and supporting the enamel. Dentin is made of living cells, which secrete a hard-mineral substance.

Pulp: the softer centre of the tooth and contains blood and lymph vessels, and nerves.

Cementum; A tissue layer which covers the root of the tooth and binds it to the gums.

Why do teeth get yellow?

There are several reasons why teeth become yellow. These includes such things as genetics, food and drink we consume, age, and our oral hygiene practices.

Two main strain area involve the enamel (surface stains) and dentin (inner tooth stains)

Certain food and drinks directly stain the enamel on the surface.

Over time, Acidic foods and beverages can erode the enamel. Soft drinks (Soda) is public enemy number one when it comes to dental enamel erosion.

As the enamel breaks down and becomes transparent, it reveals the dentin underneath. Thick enamel equals whiter teeth, thin enamel equal yellow looking teeth.

Some medications are behind the inner tooth stains. Surprisingly this comes straight from Colgate’s website

Other causes of yellow teeth include antibiotic use or excessive fluoride intake in young children, which can cause yellow-stained adult teeth later.”

Taking antibiotics tetracycline and doxycycline while teeth are still developing (under the age of 8) may turn brownish-yellow.

Chlorhexidine used in mouth wash to treat gingivitis can cause discolouration. Likewise, Minocycline, used in acne treatment, may stain teeth.

Common drugs, such as antihistamines, Albuterol and blood pressure medications, are sometimes behind yellow teeth.
