Many so called “natural” products contain Phenoxyethanol.

What is Phenoxyethanol?

Phenoxyethanol is a synthetically produced product of something already produced by nature and used in many “natural” cosmetics as a preservative. It can also be found in other products such as perfumes as a stabilizer.

Many companies replaced the use of Parabens with Phenoxyethanol as a quick, cheap, effective alternative.

Is it safe?

Well, this is where individuals will needs to assess the “facts” given by various bodies.

EWG’s skin deep gives it a moderate over all health concern rating but does mention it has high concern of “Other HIGH concerns: Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Occupational hazards; Other MODERATE concerns: Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive); Other LOW concerns: Data gaps”

The Chemical Maze shopping companion pretty much says the same thing.

However, The International Journal of Toxicity believes that if less than 1% is used, it is safe. How do you know if it it is less in 1% in the product you are buying, good question. The answer is you don’t unless the manufacturer includes the percentage on the label.

It’s believed that repeated exposure over a long period can lead to dermatitis, worsening of eczema, reproductive toxicity and neurotoxicity.

In the end it is a personal choice.
